The fast track to improvement is defense -- even moreso in these days of high-scoring football.
Earth to Patton.  Earth to Patton.  You have to give this more than lip service and an annual write up in the paper(today for example) to make it real.
Here's a little cheese for your whine.

Probably. It'll be hard to hear the phone ring here in WMS tonight though.

I'm unaware of a gym in Booneville.  Don't confuse my like of Bearcat football with my love for basketball.

Class AAA Championship
Both teams scored on their first possession and it was back and forth the rest of the way. McGehee held a slim halftime lead and was leading 28-20 in the third quarter when the Leopards scored to get within a conversion. For the second time in the game, DeQueen failed on a 2-point try and McGehee opened up a two-score lead that could not be overcome. McGehee went up 42-32 with 9:00 remaining and that's the way it stayed. Owls 42, Leopards 32.

Class AA Championship

It took two plays for Harding Academy to score, but Jessieville turned in an outstanding first-half effort and battled the Wildcats to a 6-6 deadlock at the intermission. Scoring continues to be a challenge for Harding Academy and when Jessieville strikes early in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats find themselves behind. It takes two touchdowns in the final 4:02 for Harding Academy to prevail, winning 23-13 and completing a perfect season. Wildcats 23, Lions 13.

Class A Championship
It was a thriller until the second half when Parkin donned its unstoppable garb. The Tigers trailed 20-16 at halftime as Hector scored with :02 showing. Hector then stopped Parkin on its first poseession of the second half and was poised to record the mild upset. The Wildcats suddenly couldn't stop Parkin and five straight touchdown possessions led the Tigers to a comfortable 21-point victory. Hector scored late to prove it had not folded, but the trophy went back on the bus with Parkin. Tigers 47, Wildcats 26.

Don't be so glum. The Booneville boosters are buying participation rings for the team.

I think my presence bumped your out-of-pocket a few bucks.  I'd like to say I enjoyed it, but this whole thing was just a publicity stunt for your forthcoming video game.  I refuse to participate in any future versions without a participation fee up front.  In cash.

or a cheeseburger.

I understand the participation "rings" are just the tabs off the 60 cans of Dr. Pepper the boosters bought for the celebration party. Some of the players will wear them with pride and others will give them to their girlfriends as engagement rings.

trev, send your address to me in a pm and I'll get your "trophy" out to you.
Sweet. Although it was probably generic Dr Thunder because Dr Pepper is for fancy rich folks.

I guess I'll just have to be satisfied in knowing that I coached my team all year.

Rich, what have you thought about what happens to teams used this year. Do you "graduate" all teams used this year and go with the next highest rated team for each school next time around?

For next year, the teams will just continue on the course they started this year. So the beginning rating for next season will be derived from the end and average ratings of this "fantasy" season ... just like I do for RPS every year.

We'll use this past season's schedules and conference alignments. If it grows enough to make it worthwhile, we'll change conferences around after next season.

How much do we adjust each team?
We have options. We can:
-- use straight ratings derived from how the actual teams do this year. So a team that overperforms in 2010 this fall will aid the school in our season ... and vice-versa.
-- use real returning starters from this summer and apply those to the off-season adjustments in our league.
-- do it completely at random.
-- or use some combination of the above.

Ideas are welcome.

Trev was the winner with Harding Academy ... which had a perfect season.

QF ... how's Monday look. If you're up my way, we can do something around the Pinnacle area. I just love giving my sales-tax money to this little French town up here, Rogers (pronounced rah-JARES).
