Never done it, but from what I understand it's pretty straightforward.  Probably about like jailbreaking an iPhone.

It's pretty easy, and pretty safe.  I have the tools to do it still.  I can play any PSX game on my PSP and I've never paid for a PSP game.  I dunno if you can do it to the newest ones though.
